Inspiration

Experimenting with Colour

After looking into different colour schemes I have began to experiment with the ones I like to then be used for my masthead. I do like all three colours and they will fit in with the style of my magazine however not all of them would be suitable for the masthead. The blue pale is too light therefore it won't stand out as much as the masthead should, however I can now go on to experiment with this colour for other text or maybe the background colour of the pages.

Moodboard (inspiration)

These images are inspiration for when I begin to create my magazine. I have researched into different colour schemes that I believe will fit in with my style of magazine as well as different fonts. I have also looked at images that I find interesting and would like to recreate in my own way so I could use them within my magazine. Looking at contents pages and other pages that are in magazines have helped my idea process and shown me what I will need to put into a fashion magazine, however I will need to make it suitable for the north east as it is going to be a regional magazine. Also, I have looked at images of Marilyn Monroe and how she has been styled and posed, this will help when I take my own images for the magazine. I will be using a mixture of styles, from vintage to modern and show how they are similar and different.

Experimenting with fonts

Using the website 'dafont' I experimented with different fonts, Im unsure on these three because they aren't that easy to read however when I decide on a name for my magazine it might look better with these styled fonts.

Research

This magazine cover is a lot more modern styled when compared to the other two that I have looked at, I like the style and layout of this page however on my own magazine product I would prefer more text to be on the front cover so the reader has an insight of whats inside the magazine and can be intrigued and made interested by whats on the front. The image is very direct as the model is staring directly into the camera which will intrigue the buyer, I think this is a good idea because it will attract more people to the magazine, so this is something I might experiment with in my own work.

Magazine research

This is another very vintage styled front cover from Fabulous magazine, I really like how the image is on a plain background, it looks as if it has been inspired by Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe. This kind of photography is what I would like to research into for my own work because in my opinion it looks interesting and different. The 'Our fair lady' text is the main thing that stands out to me on this front cover because it is very vintage looking and fits in well with the front cover layout and style. Because the clothing that will be shown in my magazine will mostly be vintage, I would like the whole style of the magazine to show this therefore I will be looking into vintage text and colours.

Research

I like the style and layout of this Vogue magazine, the colours and main images have a vintage themed style to them which is one of the reason why I chose it to research into. The main image is the reason why I was drawn to this front cover because the way Kate Moss has her hair and make-up and the way she has been styled is very vintage, in my images I will do the same to create a vintage style. I also like how the colour text matches in with the model and how the image takes up the full page, because there is no other images on the page it makes it more interesting and the main image stands out more.

Pitch

The genre of my magazine is going to be solely based on fashion, I'll have 4 pages that show my knowledge on the subject as well as a good use of photoshop which will be the main program that I will use to create my product. I want to produce a magazine that contrasts other fashion magazines however it must target the north east as it is a regional magazine that I will be producing. I will use the typical aspects that you see on magazines, such as the masthead and 3 main colours for the colour scheme, I will use certain text and images that I know will approach my target audience and immediately attract them to my magazine.
              I would like my magazine to be based around vintage clothing, this will also show in the style of my magazine, therefore I will research into vintage colours and styles of text in order to create a layout and style that will fit in with my topic of magazine. The images shown in my magazine will be well thought photographs taken by me at different settings and locations that I believe will look interesting as well as fit in with the vintage theme that I have chosen. Researching into models and iconic celebrities from different eras and looking at photo shoots created of these people will be used as my inspiration, however I will still look into and research the modern style of today and show how similar some styles are when compared with different eras and how styles have been brought back.
               Looking into magazines such as Vogue and Grazia, that show many different styles will inspire my ideas and help me decide on an interesting layout for my own magazine. I would like to create a product that appeals to my target audience and fits in with the regional title that it will have. I will focus on the north east throughout the magazine and text by showing popular clothing stores and other aspects of fashion that is known in the area, the vintage theme will fit in as I will show similarities and differences between the styles. In my opinion this will work well because it will be interesting and different to other magazines. Within my 4 pages there will be a front cover that will show a main image taken by me, the main image will then lead to a feature on that person, as well as a contents page that will give a brief description of what is in my magazine and what kind of things you are likely to find.
           The images with my magazine will be fashion shots, I will plan out different styles and have a model or models wear the clothing that will fit in with my magazine. Photoshop will be the main program throughout the process of creating my magazine, I will use the document to edit images and also create my magazine, and because I have used this program before I know many techniques and I also know how to work the different tools and what would give the best results.
            Overall, my magazine will show fashion in different ways and how it has changed and stayed the same when comparing it to different eras. I will use my own images that will include costumes and props to give a vintage effect, I will also look into different settings to make them look more professional and realistic to my magazine. The layout and style of my magazine will fit in with the vintage theme, I will make it unique however it will include the typical conventions that you would expect to see in a magazine. Also, my magazine will be based around the north east and show how fashion is in that area because it is a regional magazine, I will do this by looking into the clothing stores in the north east. Because it is a regional magazine I will be solely attracting that area and that type of person, it will mostly be young girls from the north east who will look at my product.

Proposal

'The first four pages from an original regional magazine, together with two of the following three options:

a radio advertisement for the magazine;
two hyperlinked pages from the magazines website;
a billboard advertisement for the magazine.'

I have chosen this brief because it appealed to me most as I like the idea of being able to chose what kind of magazine I would like to produce for. My first thoughts were a regional fashion magazine and this is what I am going to stick with throughout because fashion interests me and is something I like writing about therefore I will enjoy creating pages for regional fashion magazines. I have a lot of knowledge on vintage clothing and the different styles from different eras so within my work I would like to include a variety of styles from different decades.
            To produce my work I will mostly be using photoshop to create the first 4 pages of the magazine, because of my AS coursework I have a lot of experience with working with photoshop therefore I know the different aspects of the program and what tools work best to carry out certain tasks. When researching into my brief I will look into a variety of fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Grazia and Fabulous however the magazine that I choose will be a regional magazine that is sold in the north east, therefore I will be attracting a certain target audience.
             I would like to achieve at the end of this coursework 4 pages that fit in with my chosen regional fashion magazine but also stand out and show my knowledge on the subject and what I am capable of doing in photoshop. I will take aspects out of certain magazines such as Vogue, because I really like how the magazine is laid out and how the colour choices always seem to depend on the season that it has been released in. However I will also look into cheaper magazines such as Fabulous and Company and show high street clothing because my target audience will mostly be based around young women as well as people living in the north east where most of the shops are high street. I would like to achieve a unique magazine and show different styled clothing therefore it will be mostly based around vintage clothing and different eras but still show relevant clothing to the northeast and how different fashions have been brought back. Overall, my magazine will be a regional fashion product that will appeal to young girls/women that live in the north east, it will show unique images taken by myself and include usual items that you would expect to find in a fashion magazine.

Reflection on AS coursework

In my AS media coursework I put together 3 pages of a magazine using various documents on the computer however it was mostly photoshop where I created the final product. Researching into different styled magazines helped me focus my ideas and gather my thoughts on what I wanted to create and whether I would challenge the typical conventions of a music magazine. Trying out different colours and styled fonts was a very long process until I was happy with the outcome, I used the website dafont to find interesting text that would stand out on my magazine and look different to others.
             Overall I am pleased with how my AS coursework turned out, I stuck with the typical layout of a magazine with the masthead at the very top overlaying the main image as well as columns on my contents page, however I also changed things slightly to make it my own. I am happy with the layout that I finally decided on and how I have taken images that fit around the text when placed on the pages. Researching into magazines helped me throughout the coursework because it showed me the typical aspects of a magazine and what the product needs to be successful.
              My magazine could of been better if I experimented with a wider range of colours however I did stick to the 3 colour scheme. As well as that my product would of looked better and stood out if it included more images on the front cover and contents page. Also, in my opinion I used too much text on my double page spread therefore making it look slightly crammed, however all the information on the page is useful and fits in with the magazine.
